Around Washington
A cartoon report of in-state events
art by Dan McConnell, text by Dan McConnell and Doug Collins

Governor Gregoire left town—actually left the country—as budget cuts were being made. Her unelected assistant was left in charge of the hatchet. Great jobs, especially when others increasingly don't have one.

It took a while for this cartoon to evolve. I was mad at a bear, probably a Cinnamon Bear, up in our orchard near Cashmere, WA. He totally trashed a peach tree with broken limbs on the ground and nothing remaining of the tree but a six-foot stump. Next he went to our prune trees which grow wild on the edge of our orchard. He got ninety-eight percent of those, plus wild cherries.

A Cashmere woman shot one bear and one or two more have been killed. Then another bear has recently been seen in the city of Leavenworth. I saw a sheriff's photo of him waiting patiently beside a plastic garbage can at an undisclosed home in the Leavenworth area. He looked pretty cute so I did this cartoon, with much less animosity than I had before.

Chelan County Public Utilities District Commissioner's Travel Expenses for 2009, gathered through the Freedom of Information Act. Actual numbers for the year 2009: Bergren $20,570.99, Bolz $20,221.94, Gutzwiler $16,190.00, Smith $18,556.61, and Congdon $26,660.95. Where the heck did they have to go?

And don't forget the Bellevue City Councilman who was just mauled by a bear a few weeks ago and lost an eye. He was walking his dog on a street near his vacation home. Seems that critters like bears and wild goats are getting uppity these days!
