three poems by Bob Markey

FALL IS FOR FALLING OUT OF LOVE

She was gorgeous, hilarious
and had a graduate degree
in some kind of science that paid
    her big bucks.
A keeper... at least for awhile.
Springtime was filled with magical
moments for us, right up until
    fall fell... thud!
While taking a break on a bike
ride, she took snacks from her fanny
pack... bananas and mandarin
    oranges,
then complained when I spit out the
seeds, felt compelled to pick them up
from the park before peeling her
    banana.
Still sulking, she took great pains to
strip those long stringy things from the
fruit (it took a good ten minutes!).
    She frowned and
mounted her bike. I stayed and waved
goodbye from the park. It could have
grown up to be a mandarin
    orange orchard!

QUEEN FOR TODAY

A favorite movie scene
had Bogey pulling the "Queen"
    through fetid waters
with Kate aboard... she loved him,
    was urging him on.

Flashing forward, let's say,
K represents us today,
    and B's our leader
plucking blood suckers from a
    sore, tortured torso.

A stretch? No, I don't think so.

GUESS WHO'S COMING TO THE RETREAT

One hundred forty retreatants
gathered to... no cameras please...
discuss important policy
matters such as healthcare, today's
wars... I said to get rid of the
cameras
... and those upcoming.
Tax breaks for contributors to
the campaign... those damn cameras
have to go!
... the economy,
the birth certificate issue
...just get 'em outta here!... and lack
of transparency among our
opponents... I mean out! Out! Out!
