A Poetic Look at Tacoma
two poems by Gerald McBreen
TACOMA'S GLASS ART MUSEUM
EXCEPT for its glaring absence from broadcast phews.
This story really doesn't bear mentioning.
No ear blasters dissecting straw-sucked dry bones.
Anti Christian crusaders missed it.
Legions of holy art detectives let it slip by.
part 1
The exhibition of museum personal shaping glass into
an assortment of distortions is arts rendition of Hell's Kitchen.
When they open oven doors you get a glimpse into Hades.
All the while playing in the background is Christian music.
Gospel truth. Loud and clear. Christian music in a
government funded art museum.
part 2
There were no celestial harps strumming when we toured
the circle of self-proclaimed gaudy doggy art. Along one
wall were outlines of dogs. Within these were different
scenes of other doggy creations. In one, a leg hiked dog
is visiting the Last Supper. As Jesus breaks bread with
His twelve buddies Fido is actively hosing His feet under
the table.
Obviously this is not where the term "Man's Best Friend"
originated. And of course it gives us a whole new reason
to speculate on why this was their last supper.
Certainly, if New York deserves world wide coverage for,
"feces as Mary's breast art." Tacoma is worthy of recognition
for its "dog urinating on the Last Supper art."

As you approach the dome of Tacoma
You realize you're almost to-home-a
You know you are there
Because out of nowhere
Comes a familiar scent and aroma
Editor's note: Gerald, I hope no angry mobs march from Tacoma to your town of Pacific. To help quell any antagonism, I'd like to mention that I thought the "Tacoma Aroma" had mostly disappeared with the closing of once-numerous paper mills. But perhaps instead my nose has just gotten used to it! Despite any residual odors, Tacoma is now a great destination. The city has made a near complete turnaround from its condition 20 years ago.
