BOOK NOTICES
The Children of NAFTA:
Labor Wars on the US/Mexico Border,
by David Bacon
UC Press
"David Bacon has put a human face on the devastating impact of NAFTA
on workers here and abroad. Our economic future as a nation depends on
the knowledge contained in this book. A must read! Si Se Puede!"
Dolores Huerta
"David Bacon represents the fine old tradition of American working
class journalism at its best. He's gone everywhere--from tiny Mexican
villages to the baking hot fields of California agribusiness--to get
the real lowdown on NAFTA's effects on the blue collar people who
hardly ever get a hearing in the mainstream press. "The Children of
NAFTA" should be high on the reading list of anyone interested in
globalization and trade issues."
Barbara Ehrenreich
People and Nature Before Profits!:
Toward a Sustainable Society
Choices we make in our private daily lives make a huge cumulative
impact on the environment. Do we re-use and recycle items at home? Do
we drive to work alone, carpool, or take a bus? How do we manage
pesticides, waste oil, and other harmful substances? All these choices
and many more impact environmental health.
Yet, if we are to be good stewards of this island Earth, we cannot
ignore what goes on in society, beyond our immediate personal lives.
To be effective in the struggle to safeguard, restore, and enhance a
healthy environment, we must take a balanced approach and work on two
fronts: the personal and the political.
People and Nature Before Profits isn't another one of those "50 Things
You Can Do to Save the Earth" pamphlets. The emphasis here is on the
other factors in the equation: the "big-picture" questions such as
pollution, racism, and social, economic, and environmental issues and
how they relate to each other. it's about the choices we have to make
on the societal level if we are to protect what's left of our planet's
life-support system.
This pamphlet is the Communist Party USA's new environmental program,
and is intended for environmentalists and union and community
activists who want to be more effective in their work, and all
concerned citizens who want to understand environmental problems,
their causes and solutions, and how they connect at a deep, systemic
level.
