WA Peace Team visits Baghdad

by Gary Engbrecht

Four residents of Washington state recently travelled to Iraq as delegates for Voices in the Wilderness, an international group committed to ending the sanctions on Iraq and opposing US led military aggression in that region. Anna Bachmann (Port Townsend), David Berrian (Seattle), Dana Visalli (Twisp), and Bettejo Passalaqua (Omak) have joined the Voices in the Wilderness (VITW) Iraq Peace Team representing thousands of world citizens committed to nonviolence and opposed to a US assault on Iraq. They share a desire for a peaceful resolution to the conflicts in the Middle East that can only be achieved by diplomacy. They flew to Jordan mid January traveling on to Baghdad by car. The team lived amongst ordinary Iraqis, touring civilian sites which have been bombed or are in danger of being targeted by American bombs. The team attended a press conference in Baghdad with Denis Halliday, former head of the UN food for oil program and Norman Solomon, executive director of the Institute of Public Accuracy. Other teams are scheduled to arrive.

Gary Engbrecht (spoolie@olypen.com, phone 360 385 4341) is the contact person for the VITW Iraq team. Iraq Peace Team website: www.iraqpeaceteam.org. Voices in the Wilderness website: www.vitw.org.
