Euro Scientists: End Cancer-Causing Cosmetics

(ENS)-A scientific committee of the European Union has stunned policymakers and the cosmetics industry by calling for a ban on allcarcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic substances (CMRs) in cosmeticproducts. Europe’s Scientific Committee on Cosmetic Products saidrecently that CMRs "represent a health hazard...of concern to...theconsumer...and ought not to be present in cosmetics." In consequence,the committee says, they "must not be intentionally added" toproducts. The committee's opinion comes as EU member nations arepreparing to reach a common position on proposed amendments to thecosmetics law, though these almost exclusively deal with animaltesting of cosmetics. The opinion will become part of the ongoinggeneral review of EU chemicals policy.
