Tibetan Tales for Little Buddhas
by Naomi C. Rose
Clear Light Publishing
64-page children's picture book
This book contains three tales, full color illustrations, and a foreword by the Dalai
Lama. Each tale in the book offers children and adults an enchanting glimpse into Tibetan
culture, beautiful wisdom, and simple examples of how to live in peace and kindness. In
addition to the stories, readers will find information on Tibet, a map, a glossary, and a
description of a Tibetan chant. A special and unique feature of this book is that the
stories are told in English and Tibetan.
In Tibet, wisdom tales have been passed down for centuries through the oral tradition from
teacher to student. These tales have been translated into English by Lama Surya Das in a
wonderful book of Tibetan tales for adults titled The Snow Lion's Turqoise Mane.
In an early conversation with Lama Surya Das, Naomi Rose told him she wanted to create
children's books. It was then that he passed the baton of the teaching tales to her. "Why
don't you turn some of the tales from my book into tales for children?"
Rose happily read the stories, looking for ones that could provide entertainment and fun
to children as well as a taste of Tibetan culture. She found wonderful tales with mystical
beings, yaks, goats, and even a yeti. When she had a solid draft of the book, she sent it
to His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, and was greatly honored when he wrote the foreword. In
the foreword, he writes: "I hope that books like these may serve as examples for others
in their clarity, simplicity and charming appeal to children. I am sure these stories will
bring joy to readers young and old."
