DO NOT EAT VEAL

The Humane Farming Association (HFA) is leading a National VealBoycott in an attempt to “put criminal members of the veal industrywhere they belong—in jail!” The organization explains that the typicalmale calf is taken from its mother hours after birth. “He is locked ina 22-inch-wide ‘veal crate’ for his entire life. Chained at the neck,he can’t walk or even turn around.” To keep the meat pale he isdeprived of iron, never sees daylight and gets no solid food. “He’sfed a drug-laced liquid formula that causes severe diarrhea. Excrementcollects on the animal and under the slats of the crate. He chokes onthe ammonia gases from his own waste. He is even deprived of freshdrinking water. He is forced to drink antibiotic-laced liquid feed sohe gains weight even faster.” Confined like this with hundreds ofother baby calves, “their resistance to disease is nil.” People whoeat these animals “are victims of a dangerous consumer fraud.‘Milk-fed’ calves are not fed their mother’s milk....Many of the drugsand chemicals found in veal are dangerous and illegal. More than onethird of the veal calves sampled by HFA have tested positive for theillegal and highly toxice drug clenbuterol.” To learn more or help, contact HFA, 1550 California St., San Francisco CA 94109 orwww.hfa.org.
