Liberal in Religion (Except for Catholics?)

I subscribed because I liked your liberal politics. I even vounteered to distribute issues, and a [May/June issue] bundle came today. Big mistake! It seems every issue has an article against Israel. What are you-a bunch of Catholics?

I hoped this issue would be different. But the same old anti-Israel opinion article. I'm liberal in politics. I'm also liberal in RELIGION.

After the Holocaust, the Jews deserve every advantage nations can give them. I'm sorry that your otherwise good paper has that bias.

DO NOT send any more issues for me to distribute.

-D. G.

Editor's reply:

I can't help thinking that you have the WA Free Press confused with some other paper.

You criticize us for having "articles against Israel" in every issue, which is far from the truth.

In the issue you had just received, we included an article by national progressive media columnist Norman Solomon (himself Jewish), who analyzed how media-spinners try to deflect reasoned criticism of the Israeli government by routinely labelling the criticism "anti-Semitic."

Solomon's related point is that the Israeli government is not necessarily representative of Jews or Judaism. Consider as well that the US government is in many ways not representative of the American people, a fact which seems rather clear to most progressives and probably a lot of conservatives too.

In the issue before that (March/April 2006), the only mention of anything Israeli or Jewish in this paper was an article by another Jewish writer who compared some practices of the current US government to those of the Nazi regime which he abhorred. There is nothing even remotely critical of Israel in that issue. Nor in the issue before that.

That's why I'm wondering if you have us confused with another paper.

In this current issue, we do have an article critical of Israel with regard to the large loss of civilian life in its invasion of Lebanon. This article is certainly not critical of the Jewish people nor of Judaism.

I do hope that you will reconsider your views.

Impeach Bush Now

George Bush and his cronies must be impeached for violating our Constitution and we must take action to make it happen. There is growing consensus among Americans that impeachment and investigation are the appropriate remedy. There are four major Constitutional violations which warrant impeachment and investigation, briefly described as follows:

  1. Domestic spying by the National Security Agency and other intelligence agencies without following the law.
  2. The use of false and misleading statements before Congress and the American people to lead us into war.
  3. Authorizing use of and failure to investigate the use of torture.
  4. The unlawful detention of people without allowing judicial review.
We must not wait for the politicians to start impeachment. The politicians, with few exceptions, are indifferent, lazy, frightened or held hostage by the military/industrial complex. No, we must take the lead, as we always have, and the politicians will follow. Remember the great struggles of the past: civil rights, women's rights and the right to privacy. None of these were started by politicians. The people led.

We must start now to stem the losses to our democracy before it's too late. We can't wait for the "other party" to become brave enough and we can't be put off with "it's a waste of time" because it's not and to fail to act makes us accessories to the crimes being committed against our Constitution.

The four Articles of Impeachment comprise the case against Bush and his cronies. Call me for information (360) 293-8128.
