UN: World's Cities Now Unmanageable

Seattle Peace Activist Visits Palestine

by Linda Bevis and Ed Mast

John Reese, a long-time Seattle peace activist, recently joined the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), an international peace-making campaign in Occupied Palestine. Others plan to follow from the Seattle area. John wishes to demonstrate his solidarity with the Palestinian people, to act as a witness to the persecution of the Palestinians, and to provide an accurate and reliable source of information about the atrocities taking place. He joins other peace activists from the US and around the world in demanding that the US government:

  1. Increase pressure on the Israeli government to withdraw from the occupied territories, beginning with the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of military force from the West Bank
  2. Initiate sanctions against Israel for its repeated violations of the 4th Geneva Convention, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its own national laws
  3. Stop blocking the implementation of the UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.
  4. Cease US financial support of the Israeli military
  5. Promote the accurate unbiased reporting that has yet to be seen from the US press

In the occupied Palestinian territories there are severe shortages of food, water and a desperate need for medical supplies. Food, water and medicine deliveries via medical teams have been halted by the Israeli military. Some members of the ISM have already been arrested and deported for the solidarity work with the Palestinian people. Others have been intentionally fired upon and injured, some critically, by Israeli soldiers.

"We appeal to the world not to remain silent and to come to the Occupied Palestinian Territories to help protect the Palestinian people. We are witnessing war crimes and must work to stop this. We will continue our attempts to help the Palestinian people, despite the danger to our lives," said a spokesperson for the US contingent of the International Solidarity Movement.
