Free Press Wins Project Censored Recognition

We have recently received word from Project Censored of Sonoma StateUniversity that the article "Disobeying Orders" in the Sept/Oct 2002issue of the Washington Free Press is one of the top 25 censored storiesto be announced this year. The award goes to writers Glen Milner andDavid Mann, and their article deals with pollution by the US military inviolation of federal rules. Milner says the article was indeed censoredby the mainstream media, because he pitched the article first to theSeattle Times, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and the Los AngelesTimes. Milner wants the Free Press to receive part of the credit: "Iwant you to know your work is very important."

Despite the smallerregional circulation of this paper, Free Press writers have often landedhigh honors in Project Censored's annual list, which is dominated byarticles from larger national progressive magazines.

Project Censoredreports that some 900 news stories were nominated for Project Censoredawards this year. Over 150 faculty and students at Sonoma StateUniversity reviewed the stories and voted on them in April. All of thetop twenty-five stories have since been forwarded to national judges forfinal ranking. A synopsis of Milner and Mann's article will appear inChapter one of the book Censored 2004: The News That Didn't Make theNews, scheduled for release in August from Seven Stories Press.
