Universal Health Care Pursued by Initiative

Oregon Voters first to consider revolutionary ballot measure

Last summer Health Care 2000 changed its name to Health Care forAll-Washington. The group is now in conformity with otherorganizations advocating single payer health insurance: Health Carefor All-Oregon and Health Care for All-California.

The Washington organization also joined Health Care is a Right, abroad-based coalition which is gearing up to a working conference nextMarch to explore launching a city of Seattle ballot initiativeadvocating universal health care.

Health Care for All Oregon has taken the lead by successfully placingon the November ballot the first initiative to provide full healthcare to every state resident. As we went to press Oregon voters hadnot yet made this historic decision.

Proponents of the revolutionary ballot measure acknowledged themeasure would require that taxes be raised but said it would also savebillions of dollars a year by reducing administrative costs, whileproviding healthcare to several hundred thousand people currentlywithout any health insurance. Health Care is a Right is working to place resolutions before a numberof city councils around Washington State. You can obtain a copy of adraft resolution from the Health Care for All-Washington website,www.healthcare2k.org, or you can email info@healthcare2k.org to request a copy.
