A new video about the US Army's School of the Americas, entitled "School of Assassins," is currently available through Maryknoll World Productions, Maryknoll, NY.
This short movie dramatically packs into its 18 minutes more than enough information to assist anyone interested in helping friends and associates decide whether or not to join the lively effort to close this blot on our country's name.
The film, nominated for an Academy Award in 1995, is narrated by actress Susan Sarandon ("Thelma and Louise," "Bull Durham"). Sarandon takes the viewer on a journey that includes many of the sites of crimes committed by graduates of the Army's school at Ft. Benning, Georgia. A survivor of the infamous El Mozote massacre, where over 800 peasants were killed, tells her story. Representative Joseph Kennedy (D-Mass.) tells of his efforts to have the School of the Americas defunded in Congress. Actual footage of the students training at Ft. Benning adds to the movie's impact.
Maryknoll World Productions, a publishing arm of the well-known and fiesty Maryknoll order of Catholic nuns and priests, headquartered in Maryknoll, New York, also publishes a number of other video titles of value and interest. Among these is a new release called "Banking on Debt," which deals critically with the results of policies followed by the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in the Third World. Martin Sheen narrates this new film.
When contacted by the Free Press, Scarecrow Video in the University District and Broadway Video on Capitol Hill both expressed interest in carrying "School of Assassins" as a rental. A few requests from customers might tip the scales in favor of buying the movie at these and other video shops. A copy may be purchased by sending $14.95 plus $3.00 postage to:
