Calendar/Events for November, 1993
Party for the Critters
In commemoration of Seattle's first annual Day of Cruelty Free Living, a group of animal-welfare organizations has planned a day of music, performance, art and education to be held Saturday, Nov. 5 from 12-5 pm at Westlake Park in downtown Seattle. The coalition is working against animal testing and to encourage kindness to animals.
Entertainment will include Jon Strongbow, Bart Baxter, 60 Cycle Hum, Skeleton and the Spirit, Tsunami Effect, and Ladies Don't Drum.
For more information on the event or other animal rights goings-on, call (206) 523-1739.
Anti-Intervention Conference
Planned for Seattle Nov. 5 & 6
A two-day conference to coordinate a united opposition to United States intervention in the affairs of other countries will be held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5 & 6 at the University of Washington.
The "National Conference to Reforge the Anti-Intervention Movement" will feature an impressive cast of speakers, including Bill Davis of the Christic Institute, Gulf War resister Jeff Paterson, the Rev. Robert Jeffrey of Seattle's Black Dollar Days Task Force, Harriet Walden of Mothers Against Police Harassment, and Frank Zucker of Citizens for Overt Action.
Also set to appear are Sharon Black and Sharon O'Connell, two Bellingham women who went to Iraq just after the Gulf War ended to deliver infant formula and other aid to civilians left without medical supplies and food. (A film the women produced has scenes you'll never see on network television.)
Organizers are hopeful that the conference will serve as a unifying vehicle for people and organizations who may not agree on every political and social issue, but who believe that the U.S. needs to drastically cut back its role as a global police force. With tensions building in Haiti and people continuing to die in Somalia and other countries, the conference is well-timed.
The conference will be held in room 147 of the Architecture Building at the UW. The two day event costs $25, or $5 for people with limited income. Nobody, however, will be turned away. Those unable to attend can get a videotape of the conference for a suggested donation of $50.
Digs for out-of-towners may be available at UW dorms for $33 for two nights for two people. Others are asked to call to see if accommodations can be arranged.
Contact conference organizers through Vietnam Veterans Against the War Anti-Imperialist at PO Box 95172, Seattle 98145, by phone at (206) 528-1228, or by fax at 528-1342. We'll be there. Hope to see you.
