A Good Dentist I really enjoy your work, as you know from my subscription check, and I'm still thinking about the article on bad dentists you ran a while ago. I'd like to offer up a positive example, in my own Dr. Christopher LeCuyer, D.D.S. He has filled four cavities, put on two caps (my two fwont teef!) and a marvelous gold crown over the last four years, and I could not be happier with the quality of his work. His staff are always friendly and professional, and they attend to every detail. 1101 Madison Street, Suite 1203, in Seattle. D. Patrick McArdle
The Free Press: Stereotypically Repugnant Give more space to the ideological heirs to Mohandas Gandhi, Margaret Sanger, Aldo Leopold, John Steinbeck, Rachel Carson, Studds Terkel, Buckminster Fuller, Martin Luther King Jr, etc. This century has seen titans of progressive thought and action. Who in the local area is carrying the torch into the next century? What I would like to see less of in your paper are the stereotypical representations of the owners of capital and management. Attitudes of envy and hatred are not useful toward a compassionate society. And in presenting unrealistic stereotypes of wealth and power you present yourselves as unrealistic stereotypes of the left. I have shown your paper to some close friends who have earned their bona fides as progressives the hard way, and they found your paper repugnant in that you are just as locked into the lust for wealth and power as those you envy and hate. What I would like to see in your paper is a print version of local stories given the intellectual depth and perspective that I find on the "Alternative Radio" program on KUOW. Anonymous letter You've hit it right on the button. Sorry that we're not "titans of progressive thought." We're just a bunch of local no-name writers who like to get some non-mainstream news out. And by noticing the huge number of advertisements that we sell in our paper, you could tell that really we are just lusting for wealth. Anonymous editor
Endless Drug War Garbage The July/August issue covers quite a list of medical, drug, entertainment, and bureaucratic foulups. In general, they show the risk of speaking out if you are in the minority and not connected. One of my particular irritations, and I'm not a user, is the ludicrous destructive bureaucracy that legalizes government theft of property on "suspicion" of drug dealing. And in this time of huge, profitable, legal pushing of "orthodox" drugs and treatments of questionable help and often provable harm, there is a new, one-billion-dollar waste of tax money on more stupid, cynical "drug war" posturings by Clinton, a bungling ex-general, and the gutless Congress who've let Big Tobacco off the hook (again) as they vote against pot for the dying. But what should we expect from a country that laps up crap like Anastasia, Titanic, the Horse Whisperer, and the endless garbage about space invaders? Gordon Anderson
